It is basic, common sense that physical activity reaps many rewards. When exercise takes place outdoors, however, the health benefits are significantly heightened.

At Kippure Estate, we are so fortunate to be able to facilitate challenging, yet fun, outdoor activities in a naturally pristine environment. Our high and low ropes, orienteering, survival, treasure hunt, walking and adrenaline rush activities are set amidst old growth forests and ancient farmlands abutting the Wicklow Mountains. Here are some reasons why activities at our estate, or any other outdoor location, are beneficial to your own health and that of your family, colleagues and friends.

Nature-Deficit Disorder
In his book Last Child in the Woods, Richard Louv coined the term “nature deficit disorder”. He expressed that for children, “green space” has been replaced by “screen space” and that spending time in front of a television or computer equates to a less physically active lifestyle. Louv wrote that nature-deficit leads to a “diminished use of the senses, attention difficulties, and higher rates of physical and emotional illnesses”. In our fast-paced technological world with constant images flooding screens, it helps each of us to get outdoors, slow our minds and directly experience nature.

Here Comes the Sun
No question – when you spend time outside, you are exposed to more natural sunlight which provides you with a well-gleaned source of Vitamin D. According to the Harvard Health Letter, Vitamin D has “disease-fighting powers” and helps prevent illnesses such as cancer, osteoporosis, strokes, heart attacks and depression.

Elevates Your Mood
Numerous studies, such as those performed by Dr. R.S. Ulrich, have determined that hospital patients with views of nature from their window (versus a brick wall or other urban elements) have expedited recovery times. Just imagine, then, the health effects associated with directly immersing your senses outdoors. University of Essex researchers are determining that “green exercise” (outdoor activity) leads to an elevated mood, more confidence and a higher sense of relaxation, which has a positive impact on the health of the entire body.

Playing Outdoors
Walking on an indoor treadmill is an excellent source of exercise, but can be torturous for some as they long for the session to be over. Engaging in a fun activity outdoors, whether it be climbing a rope ladder suspended from the tree tops, going on a scenic hike or playing a game of hide-and-seek, has people exercising without them acknowledging that it’s part of a work-out regime.
