Japanese Garden in Kildare National Stud, Ireland
Whether you’re a lover of horses or horticulture, a visit to the Irish National Stud and Gardens makes for an excellent day out while you’re staying at Kippure. The attraction is a source of national pride but it’s loved by visitors from all around the world, offering a trip right into the heart of Ireland’s thriving thoroughbred industry. You can learn about the history of the National Stud in the on-site museum, see truly magnificent horses and explore two gorgeous gardens.
The main attractions at the Irish National Stud are ideal for any lover of horse racing. The success of the early 20th century horse stud farm meant it was gifted to the crown in 1917, paving the way for legendary thoroughbreds such as Sun Chariot. Visitors can see the magnificent studs on the farm, and can also delve into the past at the on-site museum. The prize exhibit at the museum is the preserved skeleton of Arkle, the greatest steeplechase horse of all time. After winning the Cheltenham Gold Cup three times, Arkle gained a worldwide reputation, and has held pride of place at the museum for over 40 years.
Although the attraction is built around the stud farm, the gardens have an excellent reputation in their own right. St. Fiachra’s Garden was designed in 1999 and is dedicated to the patron saint of gardening. It aims to capture the stunning landscapes that inspired the Irish religious movement of the 6th and 7thcenturies, incorporating calming lakes, waterfalls, streams, and abundant greenery.
The Japanese Gardens are the horticultural jewel in the National Stud and Gardens’ crown, though. Created in 1906, they have a reputation as the best Japanese gardens in all of Europe. The meditative, soothing and visually stunning setting of the Japanese Gardens makes them a guaranteed delight for any visitors. From the soft trickling streams to the striking colours, the garden is designed to reflect the “Life of Man.” Make sure to walk the Bridge of Life and stop for a drink in the traditional Tea House.
The Irish National Stud and Gardens is located perfectly for a day trip from Kippure Estate, being around a 45 minute drive west of the estate, past Blessington Lakes and Newbridge. You simply head down the M7 and take Exit 13 towards Nurney. The car park is just over a mile down the R415 and left at Newton’s Cross.
