If you’ve ever found yourself sneaking down to the fridge at midnight to nibble a bar of Dairy Milk, rest assured, you’re not alone. We could not find any Irish statistics, but the Brits for example are officially a nation of chocoholics, and according to research published by Datamonitor, they eat their way through approximately 605,000 tonnes of the sweet stuff each year!
It’s difficult to tell exactly what it is that appeals so much to us ladies when it comes to chocolate. Is it that irresistible melting on the tongue? That great, sweet taste? Or is it the welcome energy boost we get when we munch down a whole chocolate bar? Whatever the reason, chocolate is officially a girl’s best friend.
It’s Medically Impossible Not to Love It
Before you start feeling guilty about your love of chocolate, you should know that according to experts, we’re physically programmed to crave it. Professor Anthony Auger from the University of Wisconsin-Madison has researched the subject, and has discovered just why women love it so much.
MR images, mapping brain activity when eating chocolate, showed that the hypothalamus (a part of the brain) was less active in women after they had eaten large amounts of chocolate. The hypothalamus helps control food intake, which explains why chocolate not only helps reduce our hunger, but makes us more motivated to eat it!
